The Customer Crystal Ball

by Troy Winskowicz on 01/25/2012

As with any software company, the more customers you have the more requests for improvements you receive. This is a great problem to have.  Each of our customers is unique and so are their perspectives.  Yet they are all birds of a feather, and this commonality is what makes PeopleAdmin special.

Many customers have asked how we decide what improvements or new features get added to the product.  Many factors go into these decisions but we have a proven approach to building the best possible products.

When we started more than 10 years ago, our mission was to provide a way for institutions to escape the burden of paper-based hiring processes.  We were very successful with that message and we are humbled and thankful to our customers who made us the most widely used solution in the government and higher education markets. Over time, our basic offering evolved to allow customers to move away from paper-based management of position descriptions and evaluation forms.  While the product grew, it expanded on the same basic value statement.

Today our customers expect more.  Most have left paper processes behind many years ago. Now they want to leverage PeopleAdmin to drive improvement in hiring metrics such as reduced time to fill open positions or increased diversity in applicant pools.  Beyond metrics, there are other strategic benefits such as using search committee management to achieve more comprehensive faculty recruiting and selection practices, or improving employee engagement through onboarding programs.

The strategies being formulated from our customers and how they manage their departments translates into thousands of complex and varied product requests to us.  Every year, hundreds of those requests are addressed in product releases.  In addition, our product management team conducts phone and in-person interviews with customers as well as working with our own internal experts to understand the problems and define solutions.

2011 was a busy year for the product team at PeopleAdmin and we are very proud of the first ever Onboarding module designed exclusively based on the ideas and needs of our higher education and government customers.

As a PeopleAdmin customer, even if you don’t request a feature, you still benefit from the other customers’ requests. That’s the great thing about our focus on higher education and government. You never have to fight with corporate customers for resources.

EVERYTHING we build EVERYONE we hire, EVERYDAY we come to the office, we are focused on you and customers just like you.  As a product manager, it is gratifying to see our features used so widely across our customer base.  It tells us we are focusing on the right things and we are staying true to our mission.
