The Department is one of four academic units in the College of Natural Resources (Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, Geography, and Wood Science and Forest Products). Established in 1979, the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products has grown to 16 full-time faculty, 6 full-time staff, 9 research-postdoctoral associates, 3 affiliated and adjunct faculty, 41 graduate students and nearly 50 undergraduate students. The department is one of the leading programs in Wood Science and Forest Products in North America and boasts a diverse faculty with wide ranging research and educational interests including: forest products marketing, non-timber forest products, packaging science, unit load design, wood performance in structures, wood composites, wood adhesion, wood formation, cell wall architecture, bio-materials, wood processing, lean manufacturing, and wood industry management. The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for the planning and execution of a comprehensive Annual Giving program designed to continue to build support for the university, including its colleges and other university programs, from alumni, parents, friends, faculty/staff and graduating students for the university. The Director will be responsible for the management of a leadership giving society, corporate in-house efforts, and web-based annual giving initiative. RESPONSIBILITIES Working closely with the college-based and program-based fundraisers and the Associate Vice President for Advancement Services, develop and execute a variety of fundraising programs using the telephone, direct mail, personal, and Internet solicitations to increase both annual gift income and the number of alumni and other constituencies who participate. This highly motivated professional will be involved with the planning and implementation of the College of Science fundraising efforts in support of current operations, endowment, and other capital purposes from all private sources. Research Scientist, Small Grains Breeding/Genomics

The research scientist will initiate, design and conduct research experiments focusing on molecular mapping of traits of economic importance in wheat and barley and implementation of a molecular marker assisted variety development program with emphasis on end-use quality and resistance to diseases including fusarium head blight, powdery mildew, leaf rust, stripe rust, and glume blotch. The successful candidate will conduct analyses of existing environmental data from the Clinch and Powell River Systems of Virginia and Tennessee to investigate potential relationships among environmental variables and indicators of mussel population status; will assist in analyzing raw mussel population survey data as needed to derive metrics that can serve as indicators of mussel population status; will communicate as needed with natural resource agencies operating within the basin and other watershed stakeholders to obtain and appropriately interpret environmental data, develop hypotheses to be tested through environmental data analysis, and disseminate findings; and will communicate study findings to scientific audiences through peer-reviewed journal publication and through other appropriate means. Data types to be analyzed include in-stream water monitoring data (water quality, streamflow), point source discharge reports, biological monitoring data (benthic macroinvertebrates, fish, mussels), toxics monitoring (sediment quality and fish tissue), and watershed land uses.
